UNINSURED MOTORIST LAW IN LOUISIANA

If  you are not a lawyer or an insurance professional chances are you are not familiar enough with uninsured motorist insurance coverage and why you should have it. Many people say they have "full coverage" and really don't know what that means. Often, the person who thinks they have "full coverage" only has the minimum liability coverage required by the state. Worse, there are many people who know they don't have automobile insurance and drive anyway.

If you are hit by an uninsured driver or a driver who has insufficient liability coverage to pay for the damage he causes and is therefore under insured, it may be too late to decide to learn about uninsured and under insured motorist coverage.

Most people don't realize that the minimum liability limits of $15,000.00 that many people carry in Louisiana  just won't cover the medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering from injuries caused by an automobile accident. Too often we see people in serious accidents who have no way to cover the damages. The person causing the damage can't pay and doesn't have insurance or just not enough insurance. You want to have uninsured motorist coverage in this situation so can cover the costs and expenses from being injured and get fully compensated for your losses.

Louisiana law provides that a person who purchases insurance on their personal car will automatically have uninsured motorist coverage equal to the liability limits unless they reject UM coverage in writing or select lower limits. This selection and rejection of uninsured motorist insurance is of utmost importance but often people don't know what they are signing and sign anyway. Uninsured motorist coverage is cheap compared to liability coverage and worth the extra cost to have.
